(AMC Westshore, Tampa) On March 25 2023, international movie star Sung Kang put on his Movie Director hat on for the Florida debut of the horror-comedy film 'Shaky Shivers'. Alongside the film's 2 main leads -- Brooke Markham and VyVy Nguyen -- Kang was in good spirits interacting with fans and engaging the media on red carpet of the movie screening, both before and after the film was shown to a crowded theatre.
The film screening was one of the highlights of the 16th Annual Gasparilla International Film Festival, the largest gathering of independent films each year in the city. Kang catapulted into worldwide fandom through his portrayal of 'Han' in the action movie series 'Fast & The Furious'. Now in his 8th directorial appearance, Kang led the charming and funny lady-duo of Markham and Nguyen in this 80s-styled flick.
The movie was not a big-budget film; however, the simplicity and silliness of it all made for a very entertaining 92 minutes of showtime. I feel that beauty of this movie resided in its ability to draw the audience through such a wide range of emotions in a very brief amount of time. The story of 2 friends and their wild adventures together is a relatable storyline, and the other surprises in the movie kept at a very light-hearted level.
Immediately following the film, Kang, the 2 female leads, and Producer Bryan Yang stood up from the back of the theatre as they processed toward the front of the room just below the movie screen where they spoke of the film and took questions from the audience. All were on hand and available on the red carpet where they continued to meet with friends until they were eventually escorted out of the building with security.
This was my first time to attend Gasparilla International Film Festival, but based on the quality of this film and the overall professionalism and coordination of what I experienced, I sincerely hope to attend this event again in the future.
