(Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center, Orlando FL) Seemingly, the majority of central Florida's nurse population was absent from the hospitals tonight as the Walt Disney Theatre at Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center was packed in attendance to see one of their very own, Nurse Blake, up on center stage.
Blake Lynch graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Central Florida in Orlando FL back in 2014. Upon graduating, he spent the next 8 years working in Level 1 trauma centers across the US. After releasing original comedic content about his nursing profession, his content went viral and Nurse Blake now performs to sold out venues including his 'NurseCon at Sea' cruise, one of the largest annual nursing conferences in the country.
I had previously watched some of Nurse Blake's short vids on social media. Lots of his material online are quick, short skits designed to get a sudden laugh out of the viewer. With this, I was curious and maybe even slightly apprehensive as to how the flow of the show was going to fill a 2-hour set in Orlando.
Blake opened up his set by polling the audience: asking which hospitals everyone worked at. He then poked fun at his own personal backstory, inclusive of his relatively recent divorce and situations involving his parents and their failed attempts with their son's conversion therapy. He had bits about some pretty interesting nursing situations from which he was able to draw out the humor, and tied in some pre-recorded video footage into his skit. Early on, he referenced his cousin, and toward the end of the performance, she made an appearance onstage with Blake where she had a few lines whilst engaging Blake.
The material was definitely suited toward those with nursing / healthcare backgrounds, and I respected and appreciated that that was his targeted demographic. He didn't stay too long on certain topics, and the material was tied together well and flowed well, certainly better than I was anticipating from having watched his YouTube videos prior to this night.
I'd be curious to watch his performance again in the future to see how he grows his material, and see how he progresses from here. But with respect to this specific performance, it definitely served up a healthy dose of fun!
