(Bob Carr Performing Arts Center, Orlando) If you are a Tori Amos fan, it probably would have been in your best interest to make it to Orlando Saturday 8/23/14 and possibly the days leading up to the show, as you would have had a very good chance to get up close and personal with the angelic-voiced pianist.
The North American leg of Amos' 'Unrepentant Geraldines' tour was in its final days as the tour buses pulled into Florida. Amos performed in Clearwater August 22, where she celebrated her 51st birthday whilst onstage. The final performance of the tour was in Miami August 24. Rumors spread quickly amongst her fans that no meet-and-greets would be held in either city; however, many of these same fans descended into Orlando Saturday August 23 when word spread that Amos would be holding a meet-and-greet there prior to her show.
The FREE meet-and-greet began at 2 p.m. on Saturday and was open to anyone who was standing in line at the time the doors to the Bob Carr were opened. The line for this began to form at approximately 1 a.m. when fans from the Clearwater show apparently drove straight to Orlando immediately after their concert for the chance to meet Tori. An unconfirmed range of 120 - 200 fans would have their opportunity to take a photo with the singer (no autographs, however) as she spent some 3- to 4- hours, greeting every one of the fans who entered the performing arts center's atrium. Excited fans hugged her and thanked her for her music as their photo with Amos was taken inside the building.
The concert itself was amazing. Acoustically, it was the best sounding show I'd ever heard in the Bob Carr -- her voice was never over-powered by the mighty Bosendorfer grand piano -- her 'Bosey' as she affectionately calls it -- as she would delicately play for most of the night but then at random would suddenly slam its fallboard (the part of the piano that, when closed, will hide the piano keys) to the surprised hearts in the audience as it would sound like a loud gunshot piercing through the crowd). Positioned behind her piano bench was a 2nd keyboard / microphone, around to which she would spin herself on her bench and alternate her playing between the two, at times even playing both keyboards at the same time as she would sing and hold one continuous note moving in between microphones.
Approximately 20 excited fans waited outside by her tour bus after the show. Another rumor quickly surfaced that Amos was holding yet ANOTHER meet-and-greet after her show on the inside of the Bob Carr. I'm not certain what the entrance criteria was for the 2nd meet-and-greet, but as fans slowly emerged here and there up to 1.5 hours after the concert let out, it seemed that the rumors were true. When Amos finally emerged by her bus, she appeared exhausted and was carried by 2 of her staff who had wrapped Amos' arms around their shoulders as they helped her down the 4 or 5 steps on her way to her bus. With fans looking on, Amos stood by the door to her bus, acknowledged the crowd as she said 'thank you', bowed with hands clasped together (much like she did when she initially took the stage a few hours prior), and then she boarded the bus. The fans waiting by the bus after the show were not able to take a photo or get an autograph from her, but even at almost 1 a.m. in the morning, did not seem to mind at all, several of whom remarking how wonderful she was to her fans.
If you missed the show, you also missed the graciousness of the entire Tori Amos 'experience'.
