(Orlando FL) On Saturday 7/12/14, The 'Monsters Celebrity Bowl-A-Rama' to benefit Rock Pink was held at Boardwalk Bowl in East Orlando where over $59,000 was raised in just 4 hours!
Rock Pink essentially began in 2007 when its founders, Cori Yarckin (central Florida musician) and Mark Hollamon (then concert promoter) collaborated to put on the first ‘Rock Pink’ concert event at the House of Blues. Together with fellow co-founders, Dave Fragale and Angie Carloss, the team identified a way to promote breast health awareness by incorporating the local area musical talent to help educate a younger market. In partnership with Orlando-based 104.1 radio station’s ‘Monsters in the Morning’ show, they were able to attract over 500 bowlers to Saturday’s event.
The 'Monsters in the Morning' show is the #1 rated morning radio show in Orlando. The 'Monsters' -- Russ Rollins, Dirty Jim, Soul Brother Kevin, Tuddle, and Angel -- were each in attendance on Saturday as they kept their bowling lane buddies, and other passersby hoping to take photographs with them, entertained through their fun and infectious personalities. Fellow 104.1 personalities from the afternoon ‘Phillips Phile’ show – Moira and Jack Bradshaw – were also actively bowling, and engaging each of the guests who were surrounding them (as were the Phile’s reoccurring Monday Review guests, Wanzie and Doug). Also from 104.1 but representing The News Junkie were all 3 of its hosts: Shawn, C-Lane, and Sabrina. Laura Diaz of 106.7’s ‘Johnny’s House’ morning show was there with her baby and husband. From 101.1 WJRR, “LT” and Taco Bob showed their support staying the entire duration of the event. The radio personalities were further supported by local TV news personalities – Lisa Bell, Julie Broughton, Amy Sweezey, Tom Sorrells, Danny Treanor, Erik von Ancken, Bob Frier, and Amy Kaufeldt – who each raised significant donations through ebay, through which attendees were able to bid prior to Saturday’s event with the highest bidders winning the opportunity to bowl with their favorite celebrity for the day.
If bowling just wasn’t your thing or you didn’t want to confine yourself to just one lane, you could have attended the event under a ‘spec(tator) pass’. With that, I began to walk around because I wanted to see some of the other celebrities who were there. Mark Tremonti (lead guitarist for Creed and Alter Bridge) remained close to his bowling team for much of the event to the delight of his team. In the lane next to him, former professional wrestler Dale Torberg happily took photos with all of the fans wanting to take a photo with him in his KISS wardrobe. A few steps away you could pose with Chucky Atkins (former NBA player) and Fred Stokes (former NFL player) who took the time to pal around with several kids at the event who wanted to get close to the professional athletes.
Musicians were also on hand to lend their popularity to the promotion of the event: Kenny Wilkerson, Naome Bradshaw, Cori Yarckin, Jeff Howell, DJ AK 1200, and Mark Dawson. With rockin’ music being played overhead, you could walk toward the center of the bowling center to see the silent auction featuring numerous autographed items from, but not limited to: a custom-framed autographed Michael Jordan photo, Ozzy Osborne signed photos and albums, a Dale Earnhardt Jr. signed leather Indy 500 jacket, and an autographed Orlando Magic basketball featuring so many names on it you could barely see the ball. As I looked at the auction items, a light-saber-toting Darth Vader and Storm Trooper passed me as they walked through the domiciled Yamaha motorcycles that were on display inside next to the shoe rental counter. It was because of Carl Black Orlando, visitors were able to preview the new Chevy Spark which was proudly parked toward the entrance (this would have been the first Carl Black vehicle you would have seen on the premises, if you didn’t notice the impressive fleet of vehicles this dealership had parked out on the sidewalk leading up to the venue).
At some point you would have likely walked by the eerie zombie lady, Joy, as was made up by special effects artists from the Scott Fensterer Sculture Studio. Make sure you look away from her lest you walk into the man with a snake around his neck, or a spectator carrying a baby alligator – both of which were brought in by the folks from Gatorland.
If you got thirsty or hungry, Boardwalk Bowl (the venue host) was readily serving adult beverages and hotdogs to keep both adults and children very content. Pick up a free sample from sponsors at the Mike’s Hard Lemonade booth, and you were likely standing next to card magician, Gannon Stokes. Keep your senses open as the raffle ticket number you received upon signing in may have just been called on the intercom overhead and you might have just won a really neat prize. Make sure you talk to Jamie the Psychic to tell you what you should or shouldn’t say, but remember: we’ve got attorneys Glenn Klausman and Steven Kramer inside this room so whatever you say can, and will be used against you. You could attempt to flee the attorneys, but with Detective Barb and 2 Orange County Sheriff deputies there, you probably wouldn’t get too far.
In all, approximately 80 celebrities came out to show their support for this wonderful event. I would love to have spoken with all of them, but realistically there were so many of them in attendance it was actually a pretty difficult task. Honestly, some of them gave their lane partners so much attention that they never stepped away to see the rest of the facility which was very awesome to devote that much time to their fans!
