(Orlando FL) Microsoft Store openings are major entertainment happenings. Typically when Microsoft opens a new retail storefront, it celebrates by inviting a famous musician or professional athlete to help pump up the crowd. On October 22 2013 Microsoft did it again for its 2nd store in central Florida by offering a free concert featuring PITBULL to guests who showed up on grand opening day at The Mall at Millenia in Orlando.
'Mr. Worldwide' from 'the 305' hails from Miami and is a frequent performer here in the City Beautiful. He was very thankful to the fans of Orlando for 'always showing love for many, many years.'
How much love? The 1st (100) guests in line for Millenia's Microsoft Store opening were given sparkly wristbands granting them access to a meet-and-greet with Pitbull, just before his scheduled performance. Although the store was set to officially open at 11 a.m. on Tuesday 10/22, the line actually began to form at 8:30 a.m. -- the day BEFORE on Monday 10/21! That's right, Cortney Cordova and 4 other family friends drove over from Tampa the day prior to ensure their spot in the line. They were very complimentary of Microsoft and its employees for providing them snacks and drinks as they waited in line, even escorting them to and from the the bathroom to ensure their line placement wasn't lost.
I am certain that Cortney and family had a great time less than 36 hours later when Pitbull hit the stage at 7 pm Tuesday evening. His 80-minute set was an energetic display of dance music which got much of the crowd dancing to an old-fashioned block party in the makeshift concert stage venue behind the mall. On this school night, I saw children (some still in their strollers) having a good old time with their parents. I saw couples on dates looking at Pitbull's dancers. I saw back-up musicians in the form of Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias digitally recreated on the screens behind him. Songs tonight included 'Hey Baby', 'International Love', 'Shut It Down', 'Bon Bon', and 'Rain Over Me' and about 20 others.
I did want to also call out Microsoft's philanthropic endeavors. With Congressman Daniel Webster and Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan present Tuesday morning, Microsoft handed out checks totaling over $1 million made payable to (4) Orlando community organizations: the Beta Center, Give Kids the World, Orlando Science Center, and the National Academy Foundation.
Microsoft did well in the morning to giveback to the city of Orlando through its very generous charitable offerings, and chose well to bring in Pitbull for the evening's festivities. If opening day is any indication of this store's future success, we might just have to have another block party to celebrate.
