(Orlando FL) Universal Studios Florida celebrates Mardi Gras season each year. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many of the residents of New Orleans were displaced, some of whom found their home here in Central Florida. For displaced performers who were quickly without a job in Louisiana, some of them were start a new life in Orlando by way of the Mardi Gras celebration.
On this particular night, BoyzIIMen was the main act. So, after guests of Universal Studios exhausted themselves in the park that day, they could welcome the night as the Mardi Gras floats of the parade would pass them by. The parade route passed by the main stage located by the Twister attraction. The first time I had seen these guys, it was 1992 while they were an opening act, alongside Jodeci, for MC Hammer's "Too Legit To Quit' tour.
These days BoyzIIMen consists of: Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris, and Nate Morris. Before the show started I found myself hoping that former bass Michael McCrary would appear from backstage but it never happened. Nonetheless, Shawn, WAnya, and Nate put on one heck of a great show! They danced and they harmonized. The beautiful triad of voices filled the heavens above the non-covered, open-to-the-sky, viewing area. They did ALL of their previous hits including: Water Runs Dry, 4 Seasons of Loneliness, On Bended Knees, Song for Mama,I'll Make Love to You, Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday and closed with their blockbuster Motownphilly.
A nice treat for the night was their 'tribute to motown' medley and their cover of Journey's Open Arms.
I was taken back 20 years tonight and it was something beautiful.
