(Tampa Bay FL) Tampa Bay Convention Center was the cosplay epicenter of Florida this weekend, playing host to thousands of adoring fans in now its 7th year, July 28-30 2017.
Probably the most buzz that generated this weekend revolved around actress Kate Beckinsale and her tardiness to her own special engagement speaking panel on Saturday. Hundreds of fans packed the massive convention hall where Beckinsale was to participate in a fan-driven Q&A. However, the actress was nowhere to be found -- not for more than an hour anyhow. As disgruntled fans began trickling out of the room back toward the main convention hall, Beckinsale appeared, and was highly apologetic to the many who remained eagerly waiting to see the actress in person. During her apology, she disclosed that she was delayed due to having to fill out police reports. Seemingly calm and cool, the actress responded to multiple questions regarding new projects and her cinematic career. It was not until after her panel the news leaked that a deranged fan had been stopped at the convention's main doors, attempting to sneak in a weapon to harm Beckinsale, and had been stalking her for several cities.
Another hot topic for this year's convention was Rose McGowan, who was a last minute replacement for cancelled celebrity guest Val Kilmer. McGowan was soft spoken yet remained confident and poised, her short buzzed haircut representative of her new outlook on life. McGowan was extremely gracious to her visiting fans, and hopefully she'll be back for future cons via Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay Comic Con remains one of our favorite conventions. They host some great celebrity guests, their staff is great at keeping the lines moving, and although there are a ton of attendees the convention space itself never feels overcrowded. With children 12 and under being FREE ADMISSION, it's really a great family time for fun seeing a bunch of elaborate cosplayers. A very awesome time... can't wait to see you next year!!
