(December 2 – 4, Orange County Convention Center) Spooky Empire’s Fall 2016 event was originally to be held October 6-9 but had to rescheduled to the unfortunate timing with Hurricane Matthew.
Although not every scheduled guest from the original October lineup was able to return for December (Suicide Squad’s Karen Fukuhara, and Nightmare on Elm Street’s Robert Englund), the show was able to bring in most everyone else and did not disappoint the committed fans who were able to come back out.
The super-popular youthful cast of the Netflix-original sci-fi series “Stranger Things” was the convention’s biggest draw – featuring special appearances from Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, and David Harbour – forcing convention organizers to have to appoint the cast with their own meet and greet room separate from the other celebrities. Their Q&A Panel ended up resulting in a standing room only situation with lines coursing their way throughout the convention center hall.
Mistress of the Dark Elvira (Cassandra Peterson), 16-time World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion (Ric Falir), and parody-singer ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic also attracted some lengthy fan lines as each drew their own respective cult-like followings.
The December show was well-organized, offered up a plethora of panel discussions, horror-staple appearances by Kane Hodder, Butch Patrick, and Bill Moseley, and had great vendor representation. With some controversy surrounding the October show’s cancellation, Spooky did its best to recover and offer up the best viable option to try and make things whole again with the fans. October ticket-holders could redeem use their tickets to gain access to the December show, or the upcoming April 2017 one.
CentralFloridaReview.com is greatly appreciative for Spooky Empire’s invite, and sincerely look forward to having our viewers attend the April 2017 show.
