It's not everyday that the cast of "Once Upon A Time" comes to visit Orlando, but when it does happen, it is a fairytale come true. The first weekend of June 2018 saw the likes of Captain Hook (Colin O'Donoghue), Grumpy (Lee Arenberg), Granny (Beverley Elliott), Belle (Emilie de Ravin), Alice (Rose Reynolds), Regina (Lana Parrilla), Zelena (Rebecca Mader), Jasmine (Karen David), Smee (Chris Gauthier), Henry (Jared Gilmore), older Henry (Andrew West), and Jiminy Cricket (Raphael Sbarge) in Orlando, FL at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista. The location was perfect: it was within walking distance of the popular tourist destination of Disney Springs.
ABC's "Once Upon A Time" tv phenomenon created a huge fandom around the world for people who appreciated seeing some of their favorite Disney characters brought to life in a modern setting (with iconic flashbacks to their fantasy pasts). Luckily for the locals/visitors of Orlando, Creation Entertainment put on a show/convention that brought a huge chunk of the cast of "Once Upon A Time" to the city of magic. I personally talked to a cosplayer from New Jersey who traveled all the way to Orlando just to get a photo with Rebecca Mader! Note to self: several of the celebrities had already sold out their photo opportunities long before the con even started!
Creation Entertainment's "Once Upon A Time" Convention was one of the most unique cons that I personally had ever visited. Although this con still had a traditional lobby where fans could simply gather and socialize, the heart of the convention was definitely the main theater area where the panels were held (along with costume contests and Q & A sessions with the celebrities). What made this panel room unique was that the chairs were already reserved. Fans were able to purchase & reserve their seats for the main theater area months in advance. A fan was guaranteed their specific seat in the main theater at all times of the show so they never had to worry about lining up to listen to their favorite celebrity speak.
I had the pleasure of listening to Colin O'Donoghue and Rose Reynolds talk for nearly an hour about their time on the show. The bulk of their time was spent answering questions from the fans. One lady asked what the weirdest situation they ever had with a fan. Colin O'Donoghue (who plays Captain Hook on the show) quickly refused to talk about his weirdest moments (all in good fun of course)! All of the celebrities on stage were full of humor and excitement. They were just as excited to be with their fans as the fans were excited to be with these tv stars!
Outside of the main theater, I spent the majority of my time taking pictures of the amazing costumes made by the fans who wanted to dress up like their favorite characters. Meeting these fans was just as special to me as listening to the celebrities talk!
One of my favorite fan moments was listening to this young lady talk about her picture taken with Colin O'Donoghue. Her photo with him was a fantasy come true: a princess who got to finally meet her charming pirate. Just like in the show, some people are more happy ending up with a pirate or a thief!
On my way out of the convention, I caught a glimpse of a fairytale come true: a 5th generation Camaro Rally Sport decked out in "Once Upon A Time" artwork and cast autographs! Some fans travel like true royalty!
Creation Entertainment put on a special show for Orlando. It is one that I will not soon forget...
