(House of Blues, Lake Buena Vista FL) Hailing out of Tokyo Japan, this very exciting 'nu metalcore' band named "Hanbie." was cute, yet explosive on a night featuring 2 other metalcore bands (Born of Osiris and Jinjer).
These girls came out waving and smiling one by one when they were announced. They were adorable... reminded me of 4 versions of 'Vanellope' from Wreck-It Ralph. Colorful costumes... very cute.
AND THEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE!! OMG, these girls went hard! What was going on with Vanellope? They were thrashing, and headbanging, unleashing all sorts of intense sound, and the crowd was loving the chaotic vibe. Then we get in between songs, and the cuteness overload was back.
It was amusing and entertaining. You really couldn't let your guard down in between songs because if you did, you would get slammed by the tsunami of intensity that ensued as soon as they started playing again!
With Yukina (vocals), Matsuri (guitar), Hettsu (bass), and Chika (drums), they self-describe their presence as 'Harajuku-core', which touches on the hardcore nature of their sound coupled against the Japanese street fashion influence of their colorful outfits.
Hanabie. was very different than I think most of the metalcore population of central Florida was accustomed to, but through Hanabie. we may have unlocked a new experience of both sight and sound for this particular metal-loving demographic. With the ever-growing allure of Asian pop culture, the timing of this band should poise them to be well-received in the metal world!
