(Dr. Phillips Seneff Arts Plaza, Orlando FL) From December 12 - December 29, guests can catch the Cirque Mechanics: Winter Wonder Shoppe show in an outdoor tent area located immediately in front of the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center.
The show was simple and cute, aimed to entertain spectators of all ages. To start, there were acrobats, and a person who was very good with the Chinese yo-yo. There was the lady who twirled a ribbon similar to what you see with some Olympic gymnastics floor routines. The hula-hoop contortionist was fun to watch. Then the bowling pin juggler.
Next entered the candy-cane suited contortionist who made a few people squirm in their seats, seeing that she seemingly had very few bones in her body. I was hoping to see more out of the BMX biker as he was an ongoing character in the background throughout the night that many of us were cheering on.
At the 45-minute mark, there was an awkward moment in which the lights came on, and those around me (myself included) were not sure if the show at ended or if were at intermission. Thankfully, it was only intermission, but there was notice of this. Be cautioned that our show had a 20-minute intermission -- so this would be a good time to stretch your legs and check out some of the food vendors in the 2nd of the 2 makeshift tents in the Seneff Arts Plaza. The tents are only temporary, resurrected to house this show specifically; however, the structures were very sturdy, and I will admit that the sound system was surprisingly quite excellent, especially in the face of being within a space that could not fully contain the sound (the carnival-style music played throughout the evening could easily be heard upon exiting the tents as we walked to our parking lot).
The 2nd act incorporated more of the fixtures toward the back of the stage, so during this time we were able to watch some 'pole dancing', a fun onstage skit involving an audience member, a rope-walker / climber, and 3 gentlemen alternating on a trampoline which reminded me of the old Cirque show there in Disney Springs.
Overall the show was ok, but I wasn't blown away. I will say that the performers conveyed such bright smiles and positive attitudes, that it was really fine and acceptable that I wasn't seeing super unbelievable feats of bravery or skill. For example, there were a few times when the jugglers would drop their juggled item, but I found myself cheering anyway because the person was obviously trying their best. I will also call out that this show is in a tent outdoor, so the weather (temperature) can be unpredictable. The 2 couples walking just ahead of me as I was approaching the tents did not have jackets and kept saying, "I thought this was going to be inside." I thought that it was very obvious from Dr. Phillips' website that this was not going to be inside one of the main (indoor) theatres, so I call it out here again to our readers in case they somehow also missed the memo.
I will also highlight here that there was a father and his young daughter sitting just in front of me. He seemed to really be in the moment, and was having the best time of his life as was his cute little daughter... so there's definitely a good time that can be had at this particular show.
